Found in the back of The Household Searchlight Recipe Book, 1936. I didn't make a mistake scanning, one side is upside down.
Cake
½ c water
2/3 c butter
1 ½ t baking soda
1 ¾ c sugar
½ c cocoa
2 eggs
¾ c sour milk
2 ½ c sifted flour
1 t vanilla
½ t salt
Mix water, soda, cocoa and allow to stand while fixing batter. Cream sugar and butter together til fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and beat well. Add flour alternately with sour milk. Add 1st mixture, mix throroughly. Turn into 2 9” pans and bake 350° for 30 minutes.
Frosting
2 egg whites
1 ½ c sugar
5 T cold water
1 ½ t light corn syrup
1 t vanilla
Put egg whites, sugar, water, and corn syrup in upper part of double boiler. Place over rapidly boiling water, beat constantly with rotary egg beater and cook 7 minutes or until frosting will stand in peaks. Remove from fire, add vanilla, and beat until thick enough to spread.
